Perhaps the studio that revivedKid Icarusflew too close to greatness,Andriasang reportsthat Project Sora has melted away after the release of its first and only game. According to itsofficial website, the developer closed up shop on June 30th with the webpage itself set to disappear at the end of the month.
The Nintendo subsidiary was originally founded back in 2009 following the release ofSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Its leader,Kirbycreator Masahiro Sakurai, resigned from Nintendo’s HAL Laboratories four years earlier but continues to work for the platform holder under the banner of his personal freelance design company,Sora Ltd.

Given thatSakurai previously statedthat there are no plans forKid Icarus Uprisingsequel and his involvement with the upcomingNamco-developedSmash Bros.title, perhaps this news isn’t entirely out of the blue but it’s unfortunate nevertheless. It’s unclear what has happened to Project Sora’s employees, but I sincerely hope that they’ve found work at Nintendo’s other internal studios.
