EA releasing Spore creature creator early

Yeah yeah,Spore‘s release date has finally been announced and people are really excited that it turned out not to be vaporware. In a handful of months we’ll be happily building a civilization/war machine to decimate whole planets, or peacefully cohabitating if that’s your bag. But god damn it I want to build weird aliens and I want to build them now! A huge part of the fun ofSporewill be the mad science and creativity that goes into creature creation, and the announcement of a release date only serves to remind me that I can’t do that now....

Final Fantasy XIV’s Omega raid is out today

Savage (hard) coming in a few more weeks Now that folks have had a chance to get their bearings inFinal Fantasy XIV‘sStormbloodexpansion, the first wing of the new raid, Omega, is upon us. Having powered up a 314 Paladin and Bard I’m ready for the task — so ready, in fact, that I took on the first three fights this morning. So far I’m enjoying Omega much more than Alex, as theFinal Fantasy Vtheme and boss mechanics (one of which involves an amazing maze/puzzle sequence) don’t feel like a retread....

Google has an adorable surprise for ‘Chocobo’ or ‘Final Fantasy’ search results

Google has a long history of easter eggs, from HTML trickery to paying homage to Bletchley Park with a very apt decoding animation. I can say with certainty that I wasn’t expecting to see a stampede of Chocobos on my screen today, though. But that’s what happens if you do a search for “Chocobo” or “Final Fantasy”, in celebration of the release ofFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth. Along with the adorable retroChocobos, you’ll also see a few Cloud Strifes, complete with Buster Sword aplenty and some (slightly disorienting) shaking visuals for the links underneath....

Hardware: Shipbreakers will begin an RTS revolution

Or so developer Blackbird Interactive hopes What isHardware: Shipbreakers? It was a question that I asked myself several times after watching the trailer that Blackbird Interactive, founded by ex-Homeworlddevelopers, released last month. The admittedly gorgeous video revealed few facts, and there weren’t many to be found elsewhere, either. So, to the source, then. Blackbird’s Dan Irish would be my guide, as I uncovered the mysteries ofHardware: Shipbreakers, an RTS set amid the husks of dead ships in a poisonous desert wasteland....

Here’s how much Star Wars Battlefront II’s loot boxes and microtransactions cost

Some would call this The Dark Side Star Wars Battlefront IIhas a convoluted progression system. There are a ton of different upgrades which are acquired primarily through Star Cards. These are used to modify characters, and even that is multi-tiered and ranges from common to legendary. There are a lot of options. But, the one constant that everything hinges on is the loot crate system. Players earn credits in-game and can use those to buy one of three types of crates: Hero, Starfighter, or Trooper....

Hobbit DLC now available for Guardians of Middle-earth

That’s one slippery Bilbo! To coincide with the release ofThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, WB Games and Monolith have added some new faces to itsTolkien-centric MOBA. Both Bilbo Baggins and Bert the Troll are available now as playable Guardians, as well as a free new map skin based on The Shire. As you’re able to see from the trailer, Bilbo is one fast and sneaky little Striker, but I still find it a little hard to categorize the lumbering and dim-witted Stone Troll as a Tactician, at least in the classical sense....
