Shout-out to Wes Cherry, Susan Kare, and everyone else involved. I adore that Cherry, a then-intern at Microsoft, “came up with the idea to writeSolitairefor Windowsout of boredom, really.”

Just last month, I started playing the mobile rendition ofMicrosoft Solitairewith XP, leveling, and daily challenges. I don’t necessarily care for those modern touches – I could take ’em or leave ’em – but the fundamentals are as potent as ever. I could bounce betweenKlondike,Spider, andFreeCellforever.

Microsoft Solitaireis the only video game I have in common with my grandfather. It means a lot to me. It’s special. And I’m far from alone. Some 35 million people play it every month like clockwork. Today, in honor of the big three-oh, the community is trying to top its most-cleared-games-in-a-day record.

You hear that, Brett? Catch my drift, Darren?Solitaire, notMinesweeper, is the undeniable GOAT.
